Electronic Verification Code to verify ITR Returns
What is EVC?
EVC refers to Electronic Verification Code. After filing an Income Tax Return; the assesse has to verify it and send it to the income tax department.EVC is a digit alphanumeric code. It is valid for 72 hours.
Earlier the assesse has to send the acknowledgement after signing it through the post. Now the income tax department has made it easy by bringing a method of digital verification through EVC.
Now the assesse is not required to run after post offices, he can verify his return from anywhere at any time.
Options to e-verify the return
There are 3 options available in the site to verify your return digitally
1. I already have an EVC to verify my return.
2. I do not have an EVC to verify and I would like to generate an EVC.
3. I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-verify return
Option 1: - I already have an EVC to verify my return
Once you have an already pre-generated EVC code; enter the code the box provided. Then your return will be e-verified.
Option 2: - I do not have an EVC and I would like to generate EVC.
Under this there are 2 sub-options again
Through Net Banking: -
Once you select this option, you will be asked to click continue so that you will be logged out of e-filing portal and redirected to a page with a list of approved banks to e-verify.
Select the bank through which you would like to e-verify and login to e-filing through net banking.
A list of returns uploaded by you pending verification will be displayed. Click on e-verify button.
If a screen of successful verification is shown; no action is required.
Through registered E-mail id & Mobile number: -
This option can be used by only those assesses who is having a total income less than Rs.5lakhs and tax payable or refund is less than RS.100.
By clicking this button an EVC code will be sent to your registered mobile & mail id. Enter the EVC code in the box and click confirm
Option 3: - I would like to generate an Aadhaar OTP to e-verify return: -
For using this option, assesses Aadhaar and PAN must be linked in the income tax site.
If not linked, a pop-up asking to link Aadhaar will be displayed on the screen. By entering the details one can link your Aadhaar and PAN.
If already linked an OTP will be sent to your mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Enter the OTP in box provide and click confirm.
In addition to above options, another option is always available to the assesse; which is “I would like to send ITR-V / I would like to e-verify later” which means the assesse has to sign it send it through post to the following address.

Time limit to send ITR-V is 120 days from the date of uploading return.
